Forge: Schedule, Classes, & Books

Class Description [with topics covered]

The Anvil

Over two days, Forge students get six hours of class with our keynote speaker for the week. Every year, our students hear from around 30 men and women in leadership from all over the country involved in business, church ministry, missions, higher education, and government. We believe the best way to teach leadership is to get our students some time with the most influential leaders that we can. This class gives our students the opportunity not just to learn information from men and women who are currently leading our culture - they get to rub shoulders with them too.

Sanctus

Sanctus is the Latin word for holy. The students will have two sections of this class per week for a total of 3 hours. The first section is focused on personal holiness and development. It covers topics like identity development, character, spiritual gifts, spiritual disciplines, disciplemaking, and marriage & parenting. The second section of the course is focused on the corporate dimensions of holiness. That class gives the students the opportunity to learn about teambuilding, conflict resolution, and basic church history.

Israel Prep

March of each year brings the opportunity for our students to embark on a 10-day study tour in the land of Israel. To prepare for their trip, the students will receive a historical/geographical survey of the Biblical narrative that will not only enhance their comprehension of the Bible itself, but also prepare them for each site they visit while in Israel.

Life 101

Pine Cove has over 150 employees in over 10 different departments and disciplines. Each week the students will have the chance to spend an hour with someone from a department that will teach them a life skill. They could meet with our auto mechanic and learn about cars or our CFO and learn about cash flows. Our director of maintenance could teach them how to patch a hole in drywall or our director of marketing could teach them the secrets of using tools like Facebook to market to a target audience.

Leadership Theory

There are a vast number of philosophical and theoretical issues that come into play when discussing leadership. Primarily the class is designed to discuss and determine what leadership really is. It will also focus on the Christian perspective of leadership as exemplified in Biblical characters – mainly Jesus himself. The course will also encourage students to discuss how to shape and change culture – not just the culture of our world, but the culture of an organization or team.

Inductive Bible Study

Whether or not our students pursue a career in vocational ministry, we believe it is important for them to have the basic tools they need to be able to study the Bible for themselves. This class will take them through the traditional Observation, Interpretation, Application method of Bible study.

Theology & Consequences of Ideas

For two hours each week, the students will investigate each of the systematic branches of Theology and its connections to worldviews. The students will be required to investigate various viewpoints on different doctrines and asked to evaluate them both in class and in writing. By the end of the year, each student will write his/her own creedal statement as a creative expression of all they have learned.

Book Discussion

Leaders ought to be familiar with the culture-shaping books of our time and those before our time. Students will have the opportunity to read and discuss several different types of books during their time at the Forge. After reading weekly selections, students will gather to have an in-depth discussion of each text aimed at not only analyzing the ideas presented by the author, but also to determine appropriate personal application as well.
