Frequently Asked Questions
We have done our best to accurately answer all your questions. Please understand that international missions is not an exact science. We will update this information if any details change.
What will the schedule consist of?
There are two parts to our ministry at Roblealto. We will be a part of the service crew for a youth camp. We will also help program one of the first family camps in Latin America. You will receive a daily schedule during the orientation time at Roblealto, but during our time as the service crew we will help in the following areas:
- serve in the dining hall
- wash the bathrooms
- program set up and take down
- enjoying camp activities
- exploring the beautiful area around the camp
- family devotions
Do we need passports and visas?
You must have a passport to travel outside the USA. Apply for one as soon as possible here. Visas are not required to travel within the European Union or Latin America but a passport is. The application process can take many weeks so apply soon.
How will we get around?
Roblealto will arrange vans and drivers who will pick us up and transport us whenever needed.
What is the weather like at Roblealto?
July is the rainy season so days are humid and can be in the 80's. The evenings and mornings are cool and can be in the 50's. Camp programs move under cover during the rain and then back out once it's stopped.
Can we raise support/funds for this mission trip?
Yes, Pine Cove is a 501(c)3 non profit organization. We can receive contributions designated to your mission trip. It is a great idea to include friends, family and your church in supporting you to go on mission. All contributions to Pine Cove are tax deductible.
What type of accommodations will we stay in?
Roblealto has four family-style cabins and 14 bunk cabins. The family-style cabins have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and sleep 16 people. Each bunk cabin sleeps eight with a bathhouse nearby.
Where do we keep our valuables?
All valuables will be collected at the orientation meeting when you arrive at Roblealto. All money, passports, plane tickets and other valuables will be kept locked in the office safe.
What is the dress code?
Dress is camp casual, so shorts and t-shirts are fine, but be prepared for rain. It is cool in the mornings and evenings so make sure you have a jacket or sweatshirt for these times. We will be able to swim so pack a modest swimsuit.
Can we do laundry?
There is a washing machine, detergent and clothes lines available at camp should the need arise for you to do laundry while there.
What will my children do?
Camp is a great place for children! Your children will join in on the service when appropriate and enjoy the fun of camp at other times. It is our hope that your children will work along side you as much of the time as they are able. Some of the older children may be assigned to serve the team by leading activities with the younger children.
What is the food like?
Camp food is great. Everything is prepared in the camp kitchen and is nutritious in order to keep campers and staff healthy and happy. Latin American food is different from North American food. There is a lot of variety in fruits and soups. You should plan on having plenty of rice and beans. We will also have the opportunity to eat out a couple of times to experience the culture.
Will I be able to speak to anyone in English?
Some of the full-time staff and many of the counselors are fluent in English. Everyone takes English in school, so their comfort level in practicing their English with you will determine if you will have some good camper conversations.
What kind of power supply does Costa Rica use?
Costa Rica uses 110 volt like in the USA, and has standatd two-prong plugs. So, if you need a three-prong, grounded plug, bring an adapter.
What cultural/tourist sites will we see?
A visit to Poas, a volcano, will be the main excursion, but we will also explore the city of San Josa and a visit to a local church.
What is the currency in Costa Rica?
The Colon is the common currency in Costa Rica. Tourist spots accept US Dollars for souvenir shopping, which will be your only chance for expenses. All the cost for transportation, meals and fees are covered.
Will we have email access at camp?
The camp office has wireless internet access, so around the office there is limited access.
What about a medical emergency?
There will be a nurse on site for first aid, and San Jose is about 30 minutes away. The best emergency hospital in San Jose is about 45 minutes away. Each person will be covered by a supplementary trip insurance that handles emergency evacuation needs.
What about immunizations?
Check with your Doctor about recommended immunizations before traveling abroad. A helpful website for learning about traveler's health is located here.
What if I want to use my airline miles/points or depart from the trip itinerary?
You are welcome to secure your own airfare and join our itinerary at the airport in San Jose(SJO). You are also able to depart from us at the airport to do other travels in Europe. The price for your trip will be less the airfare portion which is about $1000.
