The Set Up
A few weeks ago we carried out a top secret mission. A family was here and for the first time in eight years without their dad. This happens often when you have a dad who is in the military. The week was going well and the family felt loved and taken care of but there was a void. Dad was not there to take the kids to the pool or encourage them off the zip line. Mom didn’t have her normal picnic date on Tuesday night. There was still loving and energetic staff there to help come along side, but it is never quite the same. Unbeknownst to the family, staff were behind the scenes planning the biggest surprise homecoming that they had ever seen. Dad had called Hip Shot to let him know that he would be able to make it to camp in time to spend the last few days with his family.
So we came up with the plan. He would fly the super long flight from one side of the world to the other and then get into his car and make the long drive to Pine Cove. Schmee would then pick him up at the back gate, sneak him into camp, and have an under cover meal in his office. While that was happening, we were getting the set (our office), computers, and our sound system ready for the surprise. We would have Dad in the office acting like he was skyping from overseas while the family and all the other campers would be in the dining hall watching him on the screen. Someone (Hip Shot) would call Dad to do something off camera, where he would then run over to the back door of the dining hall and our very own Hip Shot would say hi from the pretend base. Once they saw Hip Shot on the screen everyone would know that Dad was here in the building. Did it work? You tell us.
The Wrap Up
There was not a dry eye in the room. There are so many things that we all saw in those few moments. A husband embracing his children, a wife with the relief that her husband is home, and a group of families feeling joy that another family has been reunited. The love that you see and the emotions in that room were so overwhelming. And to think that we have a God who loved us so much that He sent Jesus to die for us so that we could spend eternity with Him! This video is just a small taste of the homecoming in store for each and every one of us thanks to the mercy and love of our Father:
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” -Revelation 21:1-5a, NIV
