Hi Pine Cove! It’s Kettle, Timbers Women’s Director!

You know that feeling on the last day of school before summer break? The feeling of being free from school for a while! The bell rings and you leave the building—not many people turn to go back inside, right? I mean, it’s summer break!

John 4:7-30 tells a story about a woman whose life was totally changed after encountering Jesus. This Samaritan woman had a pretty rough background, was living in sin, and was rejected by the people around her. She met Jesus when she was drawing water at a well, trying to escape the shame that followed her.

The woman had been looking for comfort in what broken people have to offer, which left her thirsty and seeking something to quench her thirst every day. Jesus chose to tell her about the “Living Water” he has to offer. In Him, there is eternal life, joy, and purpose! He sees everything about her brokenness and chose to love her anyway!

Verses 28 and 29 show the woman’s response to this encounter with Christ: “So the woman left her water jar and went away into the town and said to the people, ‘Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?’” (ESV).

She left her water jar! This is a powerful picture of how, because of Christ, we no longer need the temporary things of the world to satisfy us. Despite our past, Jesus chooses to offer US eternal and abundant life with Him!

The Samaritan woman chose to leave behind the things of the world that did not satisfy her thirst and tell everyone she knew about who Jesus is. Because of Him, we are able to follow Jesus and never turn back, which is the most exciting way to live!

Reflection Questions:

  1. What are the things you are hoping will quench your thirst, but leave you feeling empty every time?
  2. If you are in Christ, take a moment to reflect on how Jesus has brought you into a new life! As the song says, “Praise the Lord! I’ve been born again!”
