Celebrating Christmas—in July!

Things that don’t usually go together: Santa Claus and waterskiing.

But this is camp! Christmas in July is one of our favorite traditions to celebrate. Campers who happen to be at camp on July 25th (this year it was during Week 9) get the special treat of celebrating Christmas for a whole day during one of the hottest weeks of the year. (And if that happens to involve Santa Claus participating in water sports, we’re all for it!)

Yes, we did say “treat,” because the treats abound! Several camps mark the holiday with sweet treats like hot cocoa, gingerbread house-building, and Christmas cookies. It’s also not uncommon to see Christmas-themed skits, Santa Claus at Flag in the morning, a red and green color war, and decorations galore!

After all, when the temperatures are holding in the triple digits, it’s definitely refreshing to bring back memories like snowflakes and Christmas sweaters!

Every day at camp is awesome, but when we add in a winter wonderland and a few extra surprises, the serious fun is amped up even more! Seeing the stage at Club decked out in Christmas lights in the middle of summer is the best, and the only thing better than eating camp breakfast is watching the work crew serve breakfast in Santa hats.

We love celebrating the birth of Jesus all year, so why not celebrate it with all things red and green come July 25th? Campers, if you’re not at camp on this day next year, we challenge you to make it happen at home! Invite some friends over, wear your best Christmas sweater, jam out to your favorite Christmas playlist (we love this one!), and get some Christmas spirit in your summer!
