Commission Camping: Stories from Latin America

by Valerie Morby

Pine Cove Commission Camping

With 164 Pine Cove staff members currently serving the Lord at camps throughout Latin America, there is no shortage of awesome stories to share! Thankfully we are able to keep up with all of these mission trips on each of their blogs, and you can follow along too! Here is just a taste of some of the fun and life-change that is going on across eight different countries right now!

Camp in the City Costa Rica

“This afternoon we played a series of station games with water and it got CRAZY but the campers loved it. By the end of all the games everyone was soaked and dirty but it was another great opportunity to break down walls within cabins as they laughed and bonded with their counselor.”

“As this was the last day for the campers, the sweet taste quickly wore off and turned bitter for some as the bus was soon arriving. One of Jillian’s campers held her and embraced her in tears for probably more than an hour. What a great testament to how much camp has impacted these kids and how The Lord has graced us with fostered relationships despite language barriers. As they boarded the bus there were few dry eyes including the counselors. The love of Jesus knows no language.”

“Cesar is without a doubt the most joyful man I have ever met. He bounces around camp with a huge smile on his face and will not let a Pine Cove staffer pass him without at least giving him a fist bump (and exploding it). He is always telling us how sincerely thankful he is that we are here helping him accomplish his lifelong dream- to use camp to share the gospel with youth. And when he tells you this, you know that he really means it. Not only is Cesar the most joyful man I know, he is also the most hardworking and dedicated man.”

“Last night at the club, the local team had their pastor share the gospel with the kids. He then asked if any of them wanted to make a decision to follow Christ. Over 15 little ones said yes!! We are rejoicing along with Heaven! Please pray that their decision was genuine and that this week was a week of life transformation!”

Timbers Peru

“I have full faith that our partners here in Peru, with a passion for Christian camping, like we do at Pine Cove, are committed to preaching the same Gospel that has saved each and every one of us on the team from Timbers. They have watched us as we do all the crazy things we do at camp in Texas here in Peru this week, like dancing at meal times, screaming at the top of our lungs when a piece of bamboo with different colored pipe cleaners decorating the length of it (our version of the Spirit Stick) is raised in the air, and rolling around on the ground like a “Cucaracha” for our group game “El Capitán”. All the while we have shown them the different ways we do crazy things for the sake of breaking down walls and creating conversation points for the counselors and campers to talk about later. Some things (most things) surprised them and sometimes it took some warming up to, but they are understanding that the purpose behind the things we do is gospel-oriented and not just for nothing. We love Jesus and they love Jesus. We want these kids to know Jesus either for the first time or better than when they came in, and they want the same.”
