If you’ve ever dropped your kids off at camp, or if you’ve stayed at family camp, you know it takes a lot of staff to make camp happen with excellence every summer. Besides the directors, all those college students might look the same, but some do more behind-the-scenes work than others.
Every camp has a handful of staff who are on the leadership team. They’ve already worked at least one (or five!) summers, they have shown themselves to be humble, hard-working, and eager to serve, and they have been hand-picked by the camp director. They have a huge heart to serve their peers as well as campers, and a lot of times that means having really tough conversations, making big decisions, and of course making everything seriously fun!
Last weekend in East Texas and in Central Texas, and a couple weeks ago in South Carolina, all of our summer leadership teams came together for the first time in 2018. It really makes summer feel like it’s coming any day now, and we love that feeling.
When staff arrive for leadership weekend, often they assume this weekend will tell them everything they need to know about being a senior counselor/ program director/ secretary/ etc. However, the weekend is much more focused on spiritual training and how to lead camp in a Christ-centered way.
Different directors speak throughout the weekend, and while some topics are all about biblical confrontation, others are about leading out of who you are, fighting comparison, and growing in humility.
We believe true biblical leaders serve, as seen by Jesus’ example in Mark 10:45, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” We also believe that followership inspires followership, just as Paul talked about in 1 Corinthians 1:11, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
Campers and staff, know that you are being prayed for big time, and we can’t wait till you’re here!
