At Pine Cove, we believe your child is a precious gift! Sending them away is an act of trust that we don’t take lightly. That’s why we maintain an uncompromising standard of care through a stringent, multi-layered strategy that includes our third-party safety partner, Praesidium, that starts on day one.

If you’re searching for summer camps, you may have been told to ‘look for the ACA seal.’ And for many camps, that’s a great baseline. But when we sat down to design our safety protocols, we immediately knew we wanted to go above and beyond industry best practices. We wanted the most rigorous, specialized oversight available in the country. That’s why we moved beyond general accreditation to partner with specialized national leaders.

Third-Party Accountability: Pine Cove’s Accreditation through Praesidium for Abuse Prevention

Praesidium is nationally recognized as an expert in the field of youth safety. They specialize in the auditing of organizations for the purpose of abuse prevention, carefully reviewing the ways staff are trained and tested and closely monitoring safety policies. Praesidium’s proven safety equation includes a rigorous risk assessment to examine and scrutinize 24 safety standards within our ministry including: policies, screening and selection of staff, training, monitoring and supervision, consumer participation, feedback systems, responding, and administrative systems.

After being assessed against 110 best practice components, Pine Cove has been consistently earning Praesidium’s highest level of accreditation for abuse prevention since 2010, and is considered an industry leader in child safety in the camping industry. Learn more about Praesidium.

The Specialist Advantage: High-Adventure and Activity Safety Inspections

Pine Cove also partners with Adventure Experiences (AE), specialists in high-adventure challenge course construction and safety, for an annual inspection of all of our zip lines, climbing walls, and ropes courses. They issue an inspection report and complete any necessary repairs or upgrades to our equipment.

Adventure Experiences also train our high-ropes staff. At each camp, a member of our full-time team obtains a Level 1 Certification from AE to oversee high-adventure activities, and our summer staff must pass a written exam and a detailed skills check in order to operate equipment and facilitate activities throughout the summer.

Summer staff who work as lifeguards are trained by instructors from the American Red Cross during staff training week. Their training is then supplemented throughout the summer by an internal staff member who has also obtained Red Cross Instructor certification.

Inspections of Pine Cove boats are performed by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary during staff training week. Checklists are used to verify that all required safety items are aboard including lights, fire extinguishers, life jackets, throwable flotation devices, sound-producing devices (air horns), first aid kits, and radios. Our summer staff undergoes rigorous training and testing to learn our boating manual and master all safety protocols.

Rigorous Staff Screening: Finding the Most Trustworthy Counselors

Pine Cove does not take lightly our calling to find the safest, most trustworthy, and most excellent staff. Alongside Praesidium, we have developed an intense screening and selection process to help us identify the best of the best. Out of 5,000 applicants and 3,000 interviews, only 1,500 staff will be hired in addition to our 1,000 returning staff for summer 2026.

Applicants for Pine Cove summer staff positions must complete a detailed application involving sharing their spiritual testimony. Several full-time staff members lay eyes on each application, weighing in with unique perspectives, long before an applicant is even considered for hiring. Applicants must then engage in a face-to-face (or video) interview with a full-time director. In these interviews, we assess character, not just charisma. Thorough background checks are then conducted on all applicants before hiring. These include a check of the National Sex Offender Registry and court records for criminal felonies or misdemeanors. Traces of Social Security numbers are performed to verify applicants’ identities and personal information to allow for more in-depth searches and ensure more accurate and comprehensive screenings. We also require applicants to provide a minimum of three personal references (pastors, employers, or mentors), excluding relatives.

If hired, staff undergo training that is longer than what is mandated by the state. Not only do they receive extensive activity safety training, but staffers are also prepared to recognize and report various types of abuse and to monitor and prevent verbal, social, and physical bullying.

Our Multi-Layered Approach to a Safe and Seriously Fun Summer

While our Praesidium Accreditation is the foundation of our approach to camp safety, it is supplemented by several other measures that help us further protect your child’s safety. Along with our stringent staff screening process and thorough safety training, we go to great lengths to ensure both medical and weather-related emergency preparedness, and to maintain the security of our camp properties. Pine Cove understands that your children are your greatest treasure. We take the responsibility of caring for them seriously.
