Have you ever wondered how someone juggles elementary and college ministries while making time for Auburn football and the occasional Taylor Swift concert? This month, we’re diving into Kylie’s story of faith, humor, and unforgettable camp moments. Find out everything from her favorite skit characters to her funniest on-the-job mishaps!
How did you get to Pine Cove?
I got to Pine Cove through Auburn—War Eagle! During my freshman year, I heard a little chatter about Pine Cove. That summer, I did an internship at my church back home, and all throughout the summer, I kept seeing pictures and hearing from my Auburn friends about how much they loved Pine Cove. They talked about the amazing culture and everything they were learning. When I got back to Auburn in August, a friend told me, “You have to do this. You would thrive and learn so much.” I was sold! I think I was one of the first to start an application for the next summer. I didn’t know anyone at Silverado, but as an elementary education major, I thought it would be the perfect fit.
My first summer was in 2018, and I haven’t left since! I spent two summers as a counselor at Silverado, then became a senior counselor in 2020. I was a program director in 2021, and halfway through that summer, I was offered the women’s director job. My first full-time summer was 2022, so I’m heading into my fourth summer now!
What’s your favorite part of your job?
I’ve loved that my role combines elementary school ministry and college ministry. As an elementary education major, I’ve always loved working with kids. I also fell in love with college ministry after working with my college ministry in Auburn after graduation. It’s amazing to see the foundational truths we’re teaching the elementary kids and watching them realize their need for a savior. With college students, the ministry is so transformational. I love that I get to be a part of both phases of life for campers and staff. It’s special not to have to pick just one.
Looking back to your first summer, what would you tell yourself then?
I’d say, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” As a first-summer counselor, I think I needed to understand that I didn’t need to compare myself to others on staff. God called me to faithfully do my job and care for the six to eight campers in my cabin each week—that’s all that mattered. Similarly, in my first full-time summer, I felt overwhelmed, wondering if I was doing everything I should. I’d remind myself that if the girls on my staff and the campers left feeling known, loved, and closer to the Father, then I was successful. That’s what matters most.
How did you get your camp name?
My full camp name is Bonshort! During the naming process, someone asked if I spoke another language, and I mentioned I’d taken French in high school. They, of course, told me to prove it, so I recited a French poem. From there, they took “Bonjour” and combined it with “shorts” after a funny conversation about me preferring normal shorts over jorts. That’s how I became Bonshort, which later was shortened to Bonsho. I can’t imagine being called anything else now!
If you were playing Jeopardy or a trivia game, what category would you dominate?
Probably pop culture! I know way too much about it. I also love music and keeping up with the Grammys. Another category would be anything Auburn sports-related. I’m loyal to an extreme.
Tell me about your family and any favorite traditions y’all have!
I’m from Cullman, Alabama, a small town in north Alabama. My family includes my mom, dad, two younger sisters, and a younger brother adopted from Haiti. One sister worked at camp with me and graduated from Auburn, and the other is a sophomore at Auburn. My favorite traditions include going to sporting events and beach vacations. Growing up, we mainly went to Gulf Shores, but now we go to Rosemary Beach!
What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever visited?
The Grand Canyon! I went in high school, and it was surreal—like looking at a painting that’s somehow real. It’s breathtaking.
What’s the most random thing you’ve done for your job?
My first-ever task on a team was to research porta potties in the College Station area for the A&M tailgate. I spent an afternoon calling companies for quotes, but we didn’t end up using any because the location decided against having porta potties. Now, whenever I pass construction sites, I feel like an expert on their bathroom options!
Do you have any goals for this year?
Yes! I’ve set a goal to read 26 books this year—one for each year of my life. I’m focusing on reading for enjoyment instead of rushing through to hit a number. I’m also planning to run a half marathon. I trained for one last year, but got injured right before the race. This year, I’m determined to complete it!
Do you have a favorite book?
I loved “Safe All Along” and the “Selection” series. I usually read one fiction and one nonfiction book at a time. It’s a fun balance!
What’s your funniest skit blooper or mishap?
I played a character named “Coachella Goodwill,” a spinoff of Cruella de Vil. One week, I had my off day on Tuesday, so my sister, who worked at camp that summer and looks just like me, played my character. No one noticed the difference! Another time, I was the bad guy in a skit, and campers spent the day yelling at my sister, thinking she was me. We’re different heights, so they definitely weren’t putting the clues together!
What’s your favorite concert you’ve attended?
The Eras Tour! I’ve been four times—three during the first run and once in New Orleans this past fall. I went with roommates, my mom and sisters, and even on a spontaneous trip to Houston. Two of the shows had seats behind the stage, but we still loved it. It was an unforgettable experience.
Tell us about your dog Hank!
I started thinking about getting a dog in summer 2023 after falling in love with one of the Silverado puppies. That puppy ended up finding another home, but it sparked my desire to care for and nurture something of my own. That’s how I decided to start looking for Hank! After keeping an ear out, I went to meet him on Christmas Eve the year I got him. The plan was just to see what he was like and continue thinking about it before I made a final decision. But… he came home with me that night and has been the best buddy since!
In a few years, when you look back on your time at Silverado, what’s one word you want to use to describe your time there?
I’d love to look back on my time at Silverado and think of the word abundance! The Lord has been so faithful throughout my time here, and has given us abundance of life in Him!
What’s the Lord teaching you right now?
Along the same lines, I’m learning about how abundant life is with Christ! We are called to be obedient and live according to Him because it truly is the better way to live! His plans for his children really are for our good and His glory. The Lord is transforming that from head knowledge to seeing it in my own life!
