Summer Trends

Over the years, Pine Cove has seen all manner of trends come through the gates and take over the camp. For example, in 2010, silly bandz were a thing. It’s 2017, and we want to share a few of this summer’s trends. Overall, the biggest summer 2017 trend is… fidget spinners!

Campers and staffers brought them to camp and carried them around during activities. Towers had a skit based on fidget spinners one week. By week two of camp, they were taking fidget spinners from campers, but a few weeks later, they were selling them in the store. Campers were dropping money left and right on fidget spinners (sorry, parents!).

While Pine Cove strives to be unified, it’s not uniform, which means that each camp had its own unique trends. Here are a few of our favorites!

  • The University of Puget Sound has a school chant that goes something like this: “All my life I wanna be a logger! Hack, hack! Chop, chop! Once a logger, always a logger!” This catchy cheer (because Pine Cove is all about catchy cheers) took several camps by storm. The Bluffs work crew even morphed the logger chant into the work crew chant. “Sweep Sweep! Mop Mop!”
  • At the Timbers, the restaurant Chili’s caught on for a week. Here’s how it happened: several camp staffers went to Chili’s one weekend. For some reason (do they even need a reason at Pine Cove?) they began saying, “To Chili’s!” in reply to nearly everything. Campers and staff would shout it in celebration when they liked something, and it was even incorporated into a skit! During the week, one staffer got a video of a waitress at Chili’s announcing the Ultra Cabin Challenge winners. The winners received free chips and salsa from Chili’s! It was epic.
  • Chimney Point staff started tagging, “For the first time ever!” to the end of announcements. They even had staff shirts made with the saying on them!
  • Crocs are making a comeback. It’s been an ongoing trend for the past couple of summers, but during the summer of 2017, Crocs were revived at the Towers.
  • Shores had a cowboy hat takeover. A majority of male staffers owned and proudly wore cowboy hats. In general though, the Shores counselors mostly wore Birkenstocks and Crocs (again with the Crocs!).
  • Converse and Henley’s were popular at Outback.
  • Choker name necklaces were fashionable for Woods girls staff and campers.

Interested in learning more about camp trends? You should come to camp and see them in person! Trust us, it’s worth it.
