We asked our staffers what their most hilarious skit moments were. From raw fish to broken doors, you don’t want to miss this!
Skippy the Fish
“Way back in the day—when the Ranch dining hall was still down by the pool (and had a fireplace with vent holes near the stage, which becomes important later)—we had a skit featuring Skippy the fish. The premise? We had ‘trained’ a fish to do tricks. Skippy was, in reality, a whole dead fish we bought at the store. Each week, we’d stage a race where Skippy ‘competed’ against a camper to get from the back of the dining hall to the stage. The camper would start running, and we’d throw Skippy overhead, letting him ‘win’ by flying to the front. One week, the race went as usual until we missed catching Skippy. Instead, the fish went straight into one of the fireplace vent holes—never to be seen again! The kids went absolutely wild.
Oh, and as a side note, I once zip-lined a raw chicken over parents’ heads during a closing celebration. Good times!” – Craig “Dutch” Langemeier, President
The Smackdown of El Baño Diablo
“One Fourth of July week, I was part of a wrestling duo called the CowaBunga Brothers. Halfway through the week, the skit’s evil villain called in reinforcements: underground street wrestling legend El Baño Diablo, played by Taylor “Fish Face” Jervis. As soon as he entered the ‘ring,’ Jervis drop-kicked me through our duct tape wrestling setup—and managed to bust his hip in the process. Despite the chaos, good triumphed in the end, but El Baño Diablo’s debut will forever live on as a dining hall smackdown classic.” – Landon “Rhymes & Dimes” Fink, Towers Boys Camp Director
The Legend of the Broken Door
“During Rally Week at the Ranch, we had a camo theme night, and someone needed to play the skit character ‘Commando Boss.’ Usually, the legendary Jiggs would walk out to Darth Vader music, but he wasn’t there that night, so they asked me to fill in. It was the last week of summer, and my camo outfit at the time was a John Cena costume (because ‘You can’t see me,’ obviously). Instead of Darth Vader’s theme, they played John Cena’s. As the trumpets started, everyone stood in the dark room, saluting and waiting for Commando Boss to make an entrance. Determined to leave it all on the field, I kicked the door open at the beat drop. The problem? I kicked it too hard. The door broke in half and flew into the dining hall. Adrenaline kicked in, so I stayed in character, jumping over the door as the crowd went wild. Meanwhile, in the back, people were making a makeshift door out of trash cans. Two years later, I joined the ETX maintenance team, told this story, and they said, ‘That was you?’ Apparently, they’d had to fix the door I destroyed. Good times.” – Keaton “Win Win” Goodrum, Maintenance Technician
Wardrobe Malfunction
“This summer, Conor and I came out during staff orientation as construction workers to demonstrate what a skit entrance should look like. Afterward, we stayed on stage to run a name game. Midway through the game, the work pants I was wearing for my character fell down in front of everyone. Luckily, I had shorts on underneath, but I still ran offstage with the pants around my ankles. It turned out to be an unforgettable moment—staff kept reminding me of it throughout the week. I guess I gave them a solid example of what not to do in an actual skit!” – Colin “Sneaky Pete” Post, Ridge Men’s Director
The Flaming Food Warmer
“A few summers ago, Sloane ‘Manchild’ Schuler and Alex ‘Licks’ Barnholdt had a grand entrance for their skit at the Timbers. They drove in on a golf cart through the back doors, but things took a surprising turn when they accidentally knocked over the food warmer meant for special diet meals. The warmer fell off the table, and to everyone’s shock, it started to catch fire! They stamped it out quickly, but it was both hilarious and chaotic. Definitely one for the books.” – Gabby “Promerainian” Barnholdt, CTX Administrative Assistant
